Transparency has to become something

JPG has no alpha channel — there is no way to encode "nothing here" — so every transparent pixel must be painted a color before encoding. Tools that do not ask you tend to pick white, or worse, black, which is where the classic "my logo now has a black box around it" result comes from. Pick the color of whatever the JPG is going to sit on: white for a document or a marketplace listing, your slide background for a deck, the page color for a web hero. Get it right and nobody can tell the image was ever transparent. Get it wrong and the rectangle is unmistakable — which is the real argument for leaving a logo as a PNG.

How much smaller the file actually gets

It depends entirely on what is in the picture, and the spread is enormous. A photograph saved as PNG is the ideal case: PNG stores photographic noise terribly, and JPG at 85% routinely lands at a tenth to a twentieth of the size with no visible difference. A screenshot of a document, a chart, or a UI is the bad case: PNG compresses large flat areas and crisp edges extremely well, JPG does not, and the JPG can end up the same size or larger while looking worse — ringing artifacts smear around text and thin lines. The before and after bytes are shown per file, so you can see which case you are in rather than assuming.

Choosing a quality setting

The default is 85%, which is where most photographic images stop being distinguishable from the original at normal viewing size. Push to 95% when the image will be zoomed, printed, or re-edited; the file grows sharply for a difference few people can see on a screen. Drop toward 70% when a hard size limit is the whole reason you are here — an email attachment cap or an upload form — and inspect the preview before you commit. Below about 60%, blocking around edges becomes obvious on flat colors and text. Move the slider and the whole queue re-encodes, so comparing settings is a drag away.

When to keep the PNG instead

Do not convert a logo, an icon, or anything that needs to sit on a colored or unknown background — the flattened rectangle will follow it everywhere. Keep the PNG for screenshots with text, diagrams, charts, and line art, where JPG both looks worse and often saves nothing. Keep it for anything you will edit again, since each JPG save re-compresses and the losses accumulate. Convert when the image is photographic, the destination is fixed, and the size or the format is a hard requirement.

Frequently asked questions

What color does transparency become if I do not change it?

White. The color picker sits next to the quality slider and changing it re-converts the queue immediately, so you can try the background color of the destination and check the preview before saving. The flattening is baked into the pixels — there is no way to recover the transparency from the JPG afterward, so keep the original PNG.

Why did my PNG get bigger as a JPG?

Because the image was the kind PNG is good at: large areas of flat color, sharp edges, text, or a limited palette. PNG compresses those losslessly and very efficiently, while JPG spends bytes trying to describe edges it is fundamentally bad at. If the size went up, that is the format telling you to keep the PNG.

Is the conversion reversible?

No, in two separate ways. The transparency is gone — flattened into real pixels of your chosen color — and the lossy re-encode has discarded detail. Converting the JPG back to PNG produces a lossless copy of the degraded image with an opaque background, not the original. Always keep the source PNG.

Does it strip metadata from the PNG?

Yes. The image is rebuilt from decoded pixels and re-encoded, so text chunks, color profiles, and any embedded EXIF do not carry over to the JPG. Colors are converted through the browser's own handling of the source profile, so an sRGB PNG — which is nearly all of them — looks the same. A PNG in a wide-gamut profile can shift slightly.

Can I convert a batch with different transparency needs?

Not in one pass — the quality and background color apply to every file in the queue, by design, so a batch comes out consistent. If some images need white behind them and others need your brand color, run them as two batches. Removing a file from the queue is a single click.
