FLUX.2 Max

FLUX.2 [max] is the top tier of Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 family, added in December 2025 after the November launch of [pro], [flex], [dev] and [klein]. BFL describes it as state-of-the-art generation and editing with exceptional realism, precision and consistency. It costs seven cents for the first megapixel, a little over twice [pro].

Anvisha's take

Max is Pro with more of everything: the self-portrait is a painting I would hang, the hard composition was exact, and the poster is clean if plain. It also took two to three times as long as Pro and costs twice as much per megapixel. On our twelve prompts I could not point to a picture where Max beat Pro in a way the price justifies, which is a useful thing to know. Buy it for the last few percent on a hero image, not for volume.

Is FLUX.2 Max free?

Black Forest Labs sells FLUX.2 by the megapixel through its own API and partners and does not run a free consumer app. Free access exists only through third parties: hosts and creative apps that bundle FLUX with sign-up credits, and the open-weight FLUX.2 [dev] and [klein] models you can run yourself.

  • BFL API: pay per megapixel, no free tier. Batches multiply the base price by the image count.
  • Open weights: FLUX.2 [dev] and [klein] can be downloaded and run locally under their licences; [klein] is Apache 2.0.
  • Third-party apps: sites like Krea, Freepik and Mistral's Le Chat bundle FLUX models with their own free allowances.

What we noticed running FLUX.2 Max

  • Counts and placement exact: three ice cubes, pencil across the rim, book left, apple right. See the hard composition picture.
  • All three lines correct, in a plain stacked layout with textured paper. Correct rather than designed. See the text in an image picture.
  • Edits are re-draws. Green and brass arrived on a dripper with a different rim and spout. See the edit an existing image picture.
  • Slower than Pro: 14 to 35 seconds per picture, median 25, against Pro's 13.
  • The self-portrait is an old-masters painting complete with a gilt frame and a plaque reading MAX, which the prompt did ask for; it is the one hero on the site that looks like it belongs in a museum.
  • Custom sizes are honoured to the pixel, and fal rounds each up to whole 1024 by 1024 megapixels: $0.07 for the first and $0.03 for each extra, so the 1024 by 1360 poster billed as two.

What FLUX.2 Max will not draw

Black Forest Labs licenses the FLUX.2 API models for commercial use and ships them with a safety checker that hosts leave on by default; fal exposes a safety_tolerance dial from 1 to 5, 1 strictest, and turning the checker off entirely needs account authorisation. The usual prohibitions apply: sexual content involving minors, non-consensual intimate imagery, and deceptive depictions of real people. There is no adult mode on the hosted models.

How this page is made

Prices, limits and settings are read from the linked vendor and host pages on the dates shown. Every picture was generated by us through fal with the request shown under it, and the original files are kept unedited. A generation that failed is shown as a failure. Model and vendor names are used to identify the products; no vendor imagery appears on this page.
