GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst
GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst is the precision model of the pair OpenAI released on 8 September 2026. OpenAI describes it as its most capable model for image generation and editing and recommends it for workflows where editing precision matters most; fal calls it precision-focused, with extra fidelity on intricate detail in exchange for longer generation times. It shares Flare's sizes, quality tiers, transparent backgrounds and mask edits, and its token prices.

›What we asked for
A self-portrait of GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, OpenAI's precision image model, as an intricate antique engraved botanical plate: a sunflower whose seed head is a fine mechanical iris, every petal and gear rendered in crosshatched copperplate line work on aged paper, a small engraved caption reading 'Sunburst', museum quality.

At a glance
- Five quality levels
- Low, medium, high, xhigh and max. At fal's list prices high costs a quarter of what GPT Image 2 charged for high; max costs what high used to. The ladder below shows all five.
- Any size
- Exact pixel dimensions from a 1:3 strip to a 3:1 banner, up to 3840 on the long edge.
- Transparent backgrounds
- A background setting gives you a real cut-out PNG.
- Mask edits
- Paint a mask over the part to change; up to 16 input images per edit.
- Precision
- OpenAI says it is built for premium visual workflows that need tighter control across edits, and names production-ready campaign creative and polished product imagery as the jobs for it.

Anvisha's take
Sunburst earns its name on edits. The dripper recolour kept every pixel outside the change, which is the job OpenAI says it is for, and it was the only model to hold a candle to Flare on the composition test. It is slower at every rung and its infographic gained a subtitle and body copy nobody asked for. My rule: Flare by default, Sunburst when an edit has to be invisible.
GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst real output: the same 12 prompts every model gets
Every model on this site gets the same 12 prompts, so you can compare like with like. These are the pictures GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst returned, one try each, nothing re-rolled or retouched. Generated on . The 12 pictures took 23 to 41 seconds each and cost $0.54 in total.

GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst settings that matter
Quality
As with Flare, the words came out right at every level and the visible differences are subtle; Sunburst spends the extra tiers on finer grain and paper texture. It is slower than Flare at every rung, and max took 72 seconds for the poster and 129 for the pizza. High is the sensible ceiling for most work; go higher only for print.

Is GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst free?
ChatGPT's free plan includes image generation, and OpenAI says ChatGPT Images 2.5 is rolling out to every ChatGPT tier including free. The API has no free tier. OpenAI publishes no fixed daily number for free accounts; the cap moves with demand and the banner inside ChatGPT is the only authoritative figure.
- •ChatGPT Free: image generation is included. OpenAI says Images 2.5 is rolling out to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users across all tiers. Limits are dynamic and unpublished.
- •ChatGPT Plus and Pro: higher limits, again unpublished as a fixed number.
- •OpenAI API: no free tier. Every image is billed per token.
- •fal, Replicate and other hosts: pay per image, no free allowance beyond any sign-up credit.
Where to use GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst
- ChatGPT · ChatGPT Images 2.5 is the consumer name; it is available on every plan including free.
- OpenAI API · Model id gpt-image-2.5-sunburst, snapshot dated 8 September 2026.
- fal · openai/gpt-image-2.5/sunburst/text-to-image and its edit endpoint.
- Adobe Firefly · Adobe says the GPT Image 2.5 models are available inside Firefly.
What we noticed running GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst
- •This is what it is for. The edit kept every pixel outside the change: same silhouette, same fluting, same shadow, with only the colour and the handle swapped. Flare did as well on this prompt, but Sunburst is the one OpenAI backs for it. See the edit an existing image picture.
- •Counts and placement were exact: three ice cubes, pencil balanced on the rim, book left, apple right, plus a plausible invented title on the book's spine. See the hard composition picture.
- •It elaborates. Unlike Flare, the infographic gained a subtitle, a paragraph under each step and a footer line, none of them asked for. Say 'headings only' when you mean it. See the infographic with steps picture.
- •Style prompts arrive signed. The ukiyo-e print carries a fabricated cartouche and a seal reading 広重, Hiroshige. Remove them before commercial use. See the specific art style picture.
- •Product shots are clean and a little flat: pure white, centred, and almost no contact shadow despite the prompt asking for one. See the product on white picture.
- •It is slower than Flare but still far quicker than GPT Image 2: 23 to 41 seconds per picture on the fixed set, median 31, against Flare's 22 and GPT Image 2's 117.
- •Custom sizes are honoured to the pixel: 1024 by 1360, 1360 by 1024 and 2016 by 864 came back exactly as requested.

What GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst will not draw
OpenAI's usage policies apply and every prompt and output passes a moderation stage. The API's moderation setting has two levels, auto and low, and a blocked request says whether the prompt or the picture tripped it and which category: harassment, self-harm, sexual content or violence. In ChatGPT there is no override. Real people, minors in unsafe contexts and violent or sexual content are the practical boundaries for design work. Every image carries C2PA metadata and an invisible watermark.

Sunburst or Flare?
Flare unless you are editing and need every untouched pixel to stay put. Sunburst is slower for the same token price.
How much does GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst cost?
The same as Flare: $30 per million image output tokens on the OpenAI API, and fal lists identical per-image figures, $0.053 at 1024 by 1024 high quality, read on 9 September 2026.
Which quality setting should I use?
The ladder above shows all five on two prompts. For edits, high; for a final detailed render, xhigh; max only when the fine texture is the point and the price is not.
How this page is made
Prices, limits and settings are read from the linked vendor and host pages on the dates shown. Every picture was generated by us through fal with the request shown under it, and the original files are kept unedited. A generation that failed is shown as a failure. Model and vendor names are used to identify the products; no vendor imagery appears on this page.
