Grok Imagine 2.0

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is xAI's image generation and editing model, released on 7 August 2026 as the engine behind the Imagine tab in the X app and at grok.com, and on the xAI API as grok-imagine-image-2.0. xAI pitches it at real creative work: small text that stays sharp, layout planned like a designer would, magic-wand and multi-reference editing, and smart resizing to other aspect ratios. It is one of the cheapest frontier models per image.

What we asked for

A self-portrait of Grok Imagine 2.0, xAI's image model, as a neon-soaked cyberpunk street photograph at night: a chrome android with a glowing X-shaped visor leaning on a rain-slick railing, holographic signage reading 'IMAGINE 2.0' reflected in puddles, shot on a 35mm lens with shallow depth of field.

Anvisha's take

This is the surprise of the batch. For four to six cents it got the hard composition exactly right, three ice cubes and all, produced a poster I would actually print and an infographic with nothing invented, and its market scene is as good as anything from the models costing three times more. The catch is time: our twelve pictures took anywhere from 11 to 95 seconds, and the edit redrew the dripper rather than recolouring it. As a cheap default for generation it is now on my list.

Grok Imagine 2.0 settings that matter

Quality

Low and medium both spelled every line of the poster correctly and both produced a designed layout; the difference at web size is texture and how much the halftone and grain resolve. Low is two cents cheaper per image at 1K. Start there for drafts and social, and pay for medium when the picture will be seen large.

Is Grok Imagine 2.0 free?

Grok Imagine is a paid feature of X. Since March 2026 image generation has been gated to X Premium, Premium+ and SuperGrok subscribers, with free accounts getting intermittent, small allowances that xAI adjusts without notice. The API has no free tier.

  • X app and grok.com: Premium, Premium+ and SuperGrok subscribers generate from a shared usage pool; free accounts have had access switched on and off through 2026 with a handful of images a day when it is on.
  • xAI API: pay per image, no free tier. Flat per-image pricing regardless of prompt length.
  • fal, Artlist and other hosts: pay per image; a request xAI refuses on policy grounds is still charged.

What we noticed running Grok Imagine 2.0

  • Counts and placement were exact: three ice cubes, pencil across the rim, book left, apple right. Only GPT Image 2, the 2.5 models and FLUX.2 Pro and Max managed that. See the hard composition picture.
  • Four headings, exact wording, an icon each, and not a word of invented copy. One of the cleanest infographics on the site. See the infographic with steps picture.
  • Set text is reliable and the layout is designed rather than dumped: all three lines correct, with a wave motif and rules that read as a poster. See the text in an image picture.
  • Edits are re-draws, not overlays. The dripper came back green with a brass handle, but taller, without its base and with a different rim. Use it to restyle, not to retouch. See the edit an existing image picture.
  • Crowds are excellent and it does not invent signage: the market has its dog, oranges, bunting and guitarist and no stall names, which is the one prompt where fewer words is a virtue. See the busy scene picture.
  • Draws its own maker's logo. The self-portrait at the top of the page arrived with an xAI mark on a sign nobody asked for. Check anything brand-adjacent before it ships.
  • Latency was wide on our run: 11 to 95 seconds per picture with a median around a minute, far slower than Grok Imagine Pro's 5 to 8. Whether that is the model or fal's queue on the day, budget for it.
  • 1K is about a megapixel in xAI's shapes: 1024 by 1024 at square, 864 by 1152 at 3:4, 1408 by 704 at 2:1, the nearest shape to our 21:9 request.

What Grok Imagine 2.0 will not draw

xAI's acceptable use policy applies through every host, and fal notes that a request refused on those terms is still charged. In practice the boundaries are the usual ones for a model with a permissive reputation: no sexual or intimate depictions of real people, no sexual, violent or harmful depictions of minors, no election disinformation, no deceptive real-person imagery without disclosure, no impersonation. xAI says generated media goes through content policy review and is not used for training.

Frequently asked questions

What is Grok Imagine 2.0?

Grok Imagine Image 2.0 is xAI's image generation and editing model, released on 7 August 2026. It powers the Imagine tab in the X app and at grok.com, and is available on the xAI API as grok-imagine-image-2.0 and on fal.

Is Grok Imagine free?

Mostly not. Since March 2026 image generation on X has been a feature of the paid Premium, Premium+ and SuperGrok plans, with free accounts getting small on-and-off allowances. The API and third-party hosts charge per image, from about $0.04.

How much does Grok Imagine 2.0 cost?

xAI lists $0.04 per image on its API, read on 9 September 2026. On fal it is $0.04 at low quality and 1K, $0.06 at medium, and up to $0.08 at 2K medium.

Low or medium quality?

The ladder above shows the same two prompts at both. Medium costs two cents more per image at 1K; whether it is worth it depends on how much fine detail the picture needs.

Does Grok Imagine 2.0 have an API?

Yes. The model id is grok-imagine-image-2.0 on the xAI API, which accepts up to 10 images per request and up to 5 source images for edits, and it is hosted on fal.

How this page is made

Prices, limits and settings are read from the linked vendor and host pages on the dates shown. Every picture was generated by us through fal with the request shown under it, and the original files are kept unedited. A generation that failed is shown as a failure. Model and vendor names are used to identify the products; no vendor imagery appears on this page.
