Design tips

Shopify recommends 48×48 pixels for a favicon — the small square icon that appears in a browser tab, a bookmark list and a browsing-history entry. It renders at roughly 16 pixels in most tabs, which makes it the smallest and least forgiving image in a Shopify store.

  • Design at 16px and scale up — that is the size it actually renders at.
  • One letter or one simple shape. Detail is lost entirely.
  • PNG with transparency, so it works on light and dark browser themes.

What you need to know

A favicon is displayed far smaller than it is supplied. Shopify's recommendation of 48×48 gives browsers a file to downscale from, but the working size in a tab is closer to 16×16 — so anything beyond a single letter, a simple symbol or a solid shape disappears.

Use PNG with transparency so the icon sits correctly on both light and dark browser chrome. A square JPEG will show its background as a visible tile against the tab.

This is the one image where you should design at the display size and scale up, rather than designing large and scaling down. A mark that only resolves at 48px will be mud at 16px.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Shopify favicon?

Shopify recommends 48×48 pixels.

Why does my favicon look blurry?

Browsers render favicons at roughly 16×16 pixels. A design with fine detail or small type will not survive that reduction regardless of the file size you upload.
