The code encodes your network details in the WIFI: format that iOS and Android camera apps recognize natively. Pointing the camera at it pops up “Join network” — no app to install, no password to read aloud or mistype. iPhones have supported it since iOS 11 and Android since 10, so effectively every phone in circulation connects this way.
Choosing the security type
Pick WPA for any network secured with WPA, WPA2, or WPA3 — that’s almost every router configured in the last fifteen years, and phones negotiate the exact variant themselves. WEP exists for legacy hardware only. “None” is for open networks and drops the password field entirely. If you’re not sure, your router’s admin page lists the security mode next to the network name.
Special characters and hidden networks
Network names and passwords containing semicolons, colons, commas, quotes, or backslashes are escaped per the WIFI: format spec, so “Café;Guest” connects instead of truncating at the semicolon — a corner many generators get wrong. The hidden-network toggle adds the flag that tells the phone to probe for an SSID that isn’t broadcast; without it, a scan of a hidden network’s code finds nothing to join.
Printing it: PNG or SVG
PNG downloads up to 2048 pixels square, plenty for a framed print or laminated card. SVG is vector — it scales to a poster or window decal without blurring, and drops into design tools as an editable object. Print dark-on-light at 3 cm across or larger and scanning works from across a table; glossy lamination and glass frames can add glare, so matte finishes scan more reliably.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to enter my WiFi password here?
The code is generated entirely in your browser — the network name and password are never sent to a server. The real consideration is physical: anyone who can scan the printed code can join the network, so post it where you’d be comfortable posting the password itself.
Does the code expire or stop working?
Never — it’s a static encoding of your network details with no service behind it. It stops working only when the details change: renaming the network or rotating the password means printing a fresh code.
Which phones can scan it?
iPhone (iOS 11+, 2017 onward) and Android 10+ recognize WiFi codes straight from the camera app; many Android 8–9 phones do too via Google Lens. Laptops generally don’t scan codes natively — guests on laptops still type the password.
Why won’t my code scan?
The usual causes are size and contrast: print at least 3 cm across, dark modules on a light background, matte rather than glossy. If it scans but won’t connect, check the security type matches the router and that the password is exactly right — the scan can only hand over what was encoded.
Can I make a code for a guest network?
Yes, and it’s the best use of one. Most routers can broadcast a separate guest network; encode that network’s credentials so visitors get internet access while your main network — and the devices on it — stay separate.
