Create a paper-named slide

Design tips

PowerPoint's paper-named presets do not match the paper they are named after. The A4 Paper preset is 10.833 × 7.5 inches, not A4's real 8.27 × 11.69. The Letter Paper preset is 10 × 7.5 inches, not 8.5 × 11. They are landscape slides that hold a 7.5-inch height, sized so a slide fits a sheet when printed rather than being that sheet.

  • The paper presets are landscape and do not match real paper — Letter Paper is 10 × 7.5in, not 8.5 × 11.
  • For a true portrait page, set a custom size to the real paper dimensions and switch orientation separately.
  • Export print-bound decks to PDF to keep text selectable.

What you need to know

This is the most surprising thing about PowerPoint's slide sizes, and almost nobody publishes it: choosing "A4 Paper" or "Letter Paper" under Custom Slide Size does not give you a slide the shape of that paper. Letter Paper is 10 × 7.5 inches — identical to the standard 4:3 slide. A4 Paper is 10.833 × 7.5. Both are landscape, and both keep the 7.5-inch height that most PowerPoint presets share.

The full preset list, in inches: Letter Paper 10 × 7.5, A4 Paper 10.833 × 7.5, A3 Paper 14 × 10.5, Ledger Paper 13.319 × 9.99, B4 (ISO) 11.84 × 8.88, B5 (ISO) 7.84 × 5.88. Alongside them sit 35mm Slides at 11.25 × 7.5, Overhead at 10 × 7.5, and Banner at 8 × 1.

The reasoning is that these presets exist to make a slide print sensibly onto that paper, not to make the slide be that paper. PowerPoint's print pipeline scales and centres the slide on the sheet, so a landscape slide proportioned for A4 fills a landscape A4 page cleanly.

If you actually need a portrait, paper-shaped page — a one-page leave-behind, a poster, a report page — do not reach for the paper presets. Set a custom slide size to the real paper dimensions instead: 8.5 × 11 inches for US Letter, or 8.27 × 11.69 for A4. Then set orientation to portrait, which is a separate control from the slide size.

For anything genuinely print-bound, export to PDF rather than an image format. Exporting slides as PNG works but loses selectable text.

Frequently asked questions

What size is PowerPoint's A4 slide preset?

10.833 × 7.5 inches. That is not A4 paper, which is 8.27 × 11.69 inches — the preset is a landscape slide proportioned to print onto A4, not a slide the shape of an A4 sheet.

What size is PowerPoint's Letter Paper preset?

10 × 7.5 inches, which is identical to the standard 4:3 slide. Real US Letter paper is 8.5 × 11 inches.

How do I make a true portrait A4 slide in PowerPoint?

Do not use the A4 Paper preset. Set a custom slide size of 8.27 × 11.69 inches, then set the orientation to portrait — orientation is a separate setting from slide size.

What are all of PowerPoint's paper presets?

Letter Paper 10 × 7.5, A4 Paper 10.833 × 7.5, A3 Paper 14 × 10.5, Ledger Paper 13.319 × 9.99, B4 (ISO) 11.84 × 8.88 and B5 (ISO) 7.84 × 5.88 inches.
