Which AI is best at pet portrait?

Why the generator defaults to GPT Image 2.5 Flare: All six produced a convincing painted golden retriever with correct anatomy and warm brushwork, so this one came down to speed and price. Flare is the default: it held the eyes, the bandana pattern and the proud, open-mouthed expression from the brief in 18 seconds for about four cents. Sunburst matched it at 33 seconds. Nano Banana 2 was more painterly with a slightly stiffer face, and Nano Banana 2 Lite gave an impressionistic background in three seconds, a fair choice for a quick preview before a final render. Nano Banana Pro and GPT Image 2 were as good and cost more or took longer.
What pet portrait is, and what makes it read as pet portrait
A pet portrait lives or dies on likeness. Owners know their animal's face the way they know a person's, so a portrait that is a generic golden retriever is a failure even if it is a beautiful painting. The things that carry likeness are the eyes, the exact markings, the set of the ears and the expression, and a good portrait spends its detail there and lets the rest go soft.
From a photo, that means the model has to hold the markings exactly while changing everything about the rendering. From a description, it means the words have to do the work: 'a white blaze down the nose and one folded ear' matters more than the breed. Generated portraits go wrong in predictable ways: markings drift, the eyes go glassy or the wrong colour, and a second pet appears when the prompt said one. Check those before you print.

Will it actually look like my pet?
From a good photo, yes: the models we use hold markings, eye colour and expression while repainting the style. Use a sharp photo of the face in even light, and check the markings and eyes before you print. From a description alone, likeness depends on how specific your words are.
What photo works best?
Face toward the camera, eyes visible, even daylight, a plain background. Avoid flash, motion blur and photos where the pet is tiny in the frame.
