Discord sizes

Discord uses specific image dimensions for profile pictures, profile banners, server icons, and server banners. Several of these features require Discord Nitro or Server Boosts, so it's important to know which sizes apply to your situation.

The most common sizes are 128×128px for avatars, 600×240px for profile banners, 512×512px for server icons, and 1920×1080px for server banners. Here are all the current specs.

Profile Banner600×240px

Discord profile banners are 600×240 pixels with a 5:2 aspect ratio. Banners appear at the top of your user profile when someone clicks your name. This feature requires a Discord Nitro subscription — Nitro Basic does not include profile banners. Animated GIF banners are supported with Nitro.

Discord profile banners display as a wide horizontal strip at the top of your user profile card. The banner is visible whenever someone clicks on your username in a server, DM, or friend list. It sits behind your avatar, which overlaps the bottom-left corner of the banner. Keep important visual elements away from the bottom-left quadrant where the avatar crops into the banner.

Best practices

  • Design at 600×240px minimum — higher resolution versions will be downscaled but look sharper after compression.
  • Avoid placing important content in the bottom-left quarter where your avatar overlaps the banner.
  • Animated GIF banners auto-play on profile view — keep file size under 10MB and loop smoothly.

Profile Picture128×128px

Discord profile pictures (avatars) are 128×128 pixels in a 1:1 square format, displayed as circles throughout the app. Your avatar appears in messages, the member list, DMs, and friend requests. Animated GIF avatars are available with Discord Nitro or Nitro Basic.

Discord avatars are displayed as circles everywhere in the app — in chat messages, the member sidebar, DMs, voice channels, and friend lists. The base resolution is 128×128 pixels, but Discord stores and serves avatars at multiple sizes internally. Upload the sharpest image you can at 128×128 or higher.

Best practices

  • Design within a circular safe zone — the square image is masked to a circle on all surfaces.
  • Animated GIF avatars require Nitro or Nitro Basic — the GIF plays on hover and in the profile popup.

Server Profile Banner680×240px

Discord per-server profile banners are 680×240 pixels, slightly wider than the standard 600×240 profile banner. This Nitro-only feature lets you set a different banner for each server you're in. The banner appears at the top of your profile card within that specific server.

Per-server profile banners let Nitro users customize their appearance on a server-by-server basis. You can have a professional banner in a work Discord, a gaming-themed banner in a game community, and something personal in a friend group — all without affecting your global profile.

Max file size

Formats

PNG, JPG, GIF

Best practices

  • Design at 680×240px for per-server banners — this is slightly wider than the 600×240 global profile banner.
  • Use per-server banners to match the vibe of each community — professional for work servers, casual for gaming.
  • Animated GIF banners work for per-server profiles too, with the same 10MB limit.

Server Icon512×512px

Discord server icons are 512×512 pixels in a 1:1 square format, displayed as circles in the server sidebar. The server icon is the most visible branding element for any Discord community — it appears in the left sidebar, invite links, server discovery, and notifications.

The server icon is the primary visual identity of a Discord server. It appears in the left sidebar (at approximately 48px), in server invite previews, in the server discovery directory, in notifications, and at larger sizes when viewing server settings. Upload at the full 512×512px for maximum clarity across all these contexts.

Dimensions

Aspect ratio

Max file size

8MB

Formats

PNG, JPG, GIF

Best practices

  • Upload at 512×512px — the icon displays at various sizes from 48px (sidebar) to 256px (invite previews).
  • Design within a circular safe zone — Discord masks server icons to circles with slightly rounded edges.
  • Keep the design simple and high-contrast — most users see it at 48px in a crowded sidebar.

Server Banner1920×1080px

Discord server banners are 1920×1080 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The banner appears as a header image at the top of the server's channel list. This feature requires Server Boost Level 2 (7 boosts). Animated GIF banners require Level 3 (14 boosts).

Server banners display as a wide header at the top of the channel sidebar. Discord crops the 1920×1080 image to show a horizontal strip — the exact visible area varies by window size, but typically only the center ~680px of vertical space is shown. Design with a vertically centered composition so the key visual elements stay visible regardless of how Discord crops it.

Aspect ratio

16:9

Max file size

10MB

Formats

PNG, JPG, GIF

Safe zone: Discord crops the server banner to a horizontal strip at the top of the channel list. Only the center ~680px vertical area is reliably visible. Keep important content centered vertically.

Best practices

  • Upload at 1920×1080px but keep critical content in the center ~680px vertical zone — Discord crops heavily.
  • Server banners require Boost Level 2 (7 boosts) — animated banners need Level 3 (14 boosts).
  • The banner also shows in invite link previews — make it recognizable at small sizes.
